Print items
Bookmark - a freebie designed to make participants feel part of a national scheme. This year we've designed it to double as an invitation for those who want a way to promote the scheme to potential participants.
Use the downloadable Registration Form (see above) to record people's full details when they take up the Challenge.
Reading diary - the key item for recording progress in the Challenge. Please ask participants to complete the diary as they read their books and take it to the library or to whoever is running the scheme (eg tutor, union learning rep) to be stamped or signed.
Participants may need some encouragement to give a brief comment about each book. Please ask them to answer the questions on the page opposite Book 6 - even if they haven't read six books. With the permission of participants, library staff and tutors may want to photocopy pages from participants' diaries for local evaluation purposes. The Reading Agency may also ask for a sample of these to be sent in for the national evaluation.
Use the downloadable Participation Record (see above) to make a note of the books they have read.
Certificate - we have provided enough certificates to cover all participants but we realise that not all of them may complete the Challenge. We have included a 'national' signature but also allowed space for someone to sign the certificate locally - perhaps a college principal or workplace manager. There is also space to add the name of the appropriate organisation.
For 2010 we produced a certificate to fit a clip frame. We recognise that this did not suit those wanting to overprint a signature on to the certificate and so we have reverted to an A4 format.
In response to several requests we have introduced a downloadable Participation Certificate for 2011 which can be sent to organisations on request.
A5 flyer - for promoting the Challenge to colleagues or partner organisations. For 2011 we have used the main Six Book Challenge branding for this in order to make a clearer link the rest of the print materials. The text on the reverse outlines the scale and impact of the Six Book Challenge 2010 for advocacy purposes.
Book recommendation leaflet - this proved popular as a new item in 2010 so we have produced it again, this time featuring some more recent Quick Reads titles as well as others for emergent readers. We've also included more quotes from participants.
All recommendations are taken from the database at www.firstchoicebooks.org.uk which includes nearly 800 titles published especially or selected for emergent readers using selection criteria developed by The Reading Agency. Challenge participants and practitioners can also reach the database via www.sixbookchallenge.org.uk
A4 and A3 posters - for publicising the Challenge in settings used by potential participants, eg colleges, community centres, libraries, workplaces. You might also want to use these alongside displays of books being promoted for the Challenge. If these posters are used in the library, other library users may ask about the Challenge. Explain that it is for less confident readers and that you are running it in partnership with local learning providers. If they are still interested, please invite them to take part and give them a Registration Form to complete. If you feel that they would benefit from some support, put them in touch with the member of staff who is leading the Challenge in your library or a local tutor whose learners are doing the Challenge.
