The Reading Agency

"The Six Book Challenge encourages people to do new things like visiting the library and choosing books for themselves."

We did well with 48 participants and 39 completers last year but it was a bit of a struggle. This time the tutors are embedding the Challenge in their workplans so that it becomes part of regular teaching - not just reading, but speaking and listening and comprehension. We've got 13 tutors involved and 55 learners signed up so far. The students are mainly Entry 3 plus but I know the Challenge is also being used with Entry 1 and Entry 2 learners.

We work closely with Helen Nahal at Telford Libraries and they provide a superb service. They have book collections in all our community centres and other venues where we teach. Library staff change them regularly and visit our classes as well. We've been planning this since October so everyone knows that we will be focusing on reading this term. And we're planning to start a reading group in the spring for learners who want to carry on sharing their reading.
