Ann Duffy, community librarian in Omagh
I've been a librarian for 16 years and I was an English teacher before that. I've always wanted to do something for emergent readers.
We went to Omagh College to speak to various classes and show them the Quick Reads and the Six Book Challenge materials. Then we offered to open the library just for them on a night when no one else would be in there.
When they came for their visit, we laid on tea and biscuits and made a welcoming area in the library for them with soft chairs and book displays. I think all those things were important.
They came in - and I couldn't get them out! They particularly loved our local studies section, where we have copies of newspapers going back about 20 years, and they loved all the books.
Then at the end of May we invited them all back for a presentation ceremony where they got their certificates. It was lovely - we really felt as if we had achieved something, because several of them had brought thank you letters for us.
