Vera Brabencova, a Czech nanny working in Powys
I arrived in the UK from the Czech Republic in September 2007 and have lived in Wales for the past nine months. I work as a nanny and go to Coleg Powys Newtown every week to improve my English.
I first heard about the Six Book Challenge from my tutor. At college we have special books to read as we are learning English as a second language. I read different books, including The Princess Diary, and then did reports on them. I was very proud when I completed the Challenge and got my certificate.
The Challenge was a much more interesting way to learn English than grammar lessons or learning lists of verbs, which can get boring. Reading a book is more enjoyable, and it helps me to improve my English vocabulary. It also helps me with spelling - spelling in English is hard - and with writing and using English properly. I think the Six Book Challenge is a good idea if you are learning English as a language, and it shows that books can be fun to read.
