Union Learning Rep, MerseyTravel, overcomes barrier
Ya Ching from MerseyTravel has been gradually encouraged into the role of ULR and has been championing the Six Book Challenge amongst her colleagues - something of a challenge in itself as the workforce is so spread out.
Ya Ching herself admits that before she joined the Challenge she had no confidence in her reading. She could understand individual words but not sentences. Now she has read and enjoyed four books! One in particular made her realize that we all have barriers to overcome. She recognises her own as English not being her first language. Reading this particular book made her realise that many have barriers to learning and reading and that they can be overcome.
"I have to say thanks to the Six Book Challenge. It has given me more confidence to pick up a book and read. I used to lack confidence to read a book because I always thought I wouldn't be able to finish it. When I joined the Six Book Challenge I started with 'Quick Read' books. They were very easy to read and were the right size for me."
