The Reading Agency

“It’s really important for my children to see me reading – children copy you. When I got my Six Book Challenge certificate, my daughter said to me 'I am really proud of you Mummy.'
Mary Jarvis

Mary Jarvis, a young mother from Shoreham

I'm 32 with three children aged 2, 3 and 8 years. I worked for ten years as a teaching assistant, was an early reader as a child and used to be a regular reader. But I had severe post-natal depression after the birth of my eldest child. I wanted to get back "on track" so I asked about the Skills for Life courses at my child's school.

The head teacher told me about the Six Book Challenge and I remember thinking I wouldn't be able to do it. I had really lost confidence and I hadn't picked up a book since I was about 25. Despite all my fears, I did give it a go and went on to read 12 books!

Without the Six Book Challenge I don't think I would have had the confidence to even pick up a book. Now I am reading every day, when the kids are in bed, or when they are having a nap or even in the car.

The Six Book Challenge gave me the focus I needed to go on and do everything else.
