Barry Burton, supervisor at Fletchers Bakeries in Sheffield
I've worked at Fletchers Bakeries in Sheffield for 23 years, since I left school at 16. I'm a supervisor and run one of the plants. The Six Book Challenge was introduced at the bakeries by unionlearn reps Alan Oakes and Michael Neville.
We have a learning centre which our union (Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union) and Mick and Alan our union learning reps set up - it has computers and a library to which people have donated books, and we also have a mobile library which comes once a month.
I was a bit unsure about doing the Challenge, but once I started, I thought that the Quick Reads books were fantastic, because you can read one in a couple of hours. My favourites were the ones by Gordon Ramsay and John Simpson. I felt as if reading again was opening up doors for me - it has helped me to relax and also to help my children.
The Six Book Challenge has also proved to me that I have got the time to get back into learning. I used to find it hard even just to sit down and write a letter, but now I feel much more confident.
