The Reading Agency

“My family knew that I hated reading. One day they saw me reading a book in my room. They were so surprised and glad because they never thought that reading would be my next interest.”

Phillipines student, 17, discovers a new interest

Lorraine Hall, a Skills for Life tutor at Chesterfield College in Derbyshire, invited her students to take part in the Six Book Challenge. One student, a 17 year old from the Phillipines, thought reading was boring and really hated it. She preferred instead to spend her leisure time watching television, listening to music and using the computer.

"Lorraine explained the advantages of reading to me. I thought that this could be a good opportunity to find out what it feels when you read. I chose the Quick Reads book - Lily: a ghost story by Adele Geras - and really enjoyed it, discovering that reading is a really good, interesting hobby."

This student has continued to develop her skills and enjoyment by borrowing books from the library to read at home. "The books I like best are the scary books. They make me feel very, very scared which I enjoy whilst reading." Now all her spare time is spent reading - she says it improves her English language, her imagination and reading skills.

"My family knew that I hated reading. One day they saw me reading a book in my room. They were so surprised and glad because they never thought that reading would be my next interest. I am so thankful to the Six Book Challenge and my teacher Lorraine Hall."
