Winning the Costa prize
Emma Lowther, a Skills for Life learner from Darlington, not only completed the Challenge but won the national prize draw of a trip to London for two provided by our sponsor Costa.
Emma came into adult education when she took an NVQ2 course for her cleaning job. Because of her dyslexia, she got a low score for the maths and English exam and started going to a weekly class. She took on the Challenge with the support of her tutor Lynne Davison and Stockton Library Service. "Someone from the library came to talk to us. We went for a visit and we all joined. I remember thinking that I'd never get six books read in the time! I found it challenging, but it encouraged us to read more and to visit the library."
And the prize? "It is the first time that I have been to a London theatre," reports Emma, "and it was magic!"
