We eased into the Challenge with well-known author Ian Rankin. As far as our tutor is concerned, you can't go wrong with the man who penned Rebus.

"An Afternoon" was taken from the archives of last year's 'Story'. The campaign aimed at celebrating the short story. An Afternoon's main character, Rab, is a policeman and we join him during the policing of a football match.

Our resident, former semi-pro footballer Mookthar explains the jargon of the beautiful game to the football novices amongst us.

We're very taken with the use of similes and metaphors. A couple of us have our sights on GCSE English in the future and analysing the use of such devices proves useful and interesting. Although it would be difficult to shoehorn them into a casual conversation, we'll be more equipped to work out further examples in other fiction books we WILL read!

Madina was impressed by Rankin's ability to pull the reader in very quickly and enjoyed the fact the story was told from a policemen's point of view.

The story was quite significant for Alan as it was the very first time he had read a story in English during his 27 years in the UK. Alan found out how valuable "context" can be.
Although confused at first by some words in isolation, he found he was able to make sense of the meaning upon reading the entire sentence.

All in all, it was very satisfying to complete the first story of the Challenge.

The six book challenge and what I think ?
The six book challenge has helped me greatly with my spoken English as well as my written.

When I have finally finished this challenge I will recommend all the authors. .I am looking forward to more books to read.

When I read books which have clear ,easy-to read text , and contain a number of photographs, it is easier for me because English is not my first language.

It has taught me how to enjoy and understand my reading , not just read and forget.

I have read 3 books so far : First one is Dangerous Journey ,It is fantastic book .
Author : Alwyn cox ,
The story is explained well through words and pictures.

Second one is Shakespeare .
Author : Bill Bryson.

This is about Shakespeare who lived in hard times and became a brilliant writer of drama and comedy that everyone can read.

Third one is Martin Luther KIng .
Author :Julia Holt
This book is very accurate with its descriptions of facts.

Those who read books learn new things about life and they start to think better than usual. When everybody starts to read I'm sure there are those who really enjoy and don't leave their books.I think when people travel to anywhere they must read a book for a good journey.Sometimes people who feel bored during this time they should read a book to feel better.

I like to read books and I am enjoying the 6 books challenge, but I chose simple books because i learn evrey thing about that. When I was young, I played football. This was my first book in this challenge which was a biography.

Some people probably have a favourite football player. For some it was Pele, Maradona or now it may be Gazza, but one player stands out above them all.He was born on May 1946 and grew up outside Belfast. He was a small and skinny boy.One day, a scout for Manchester United came to watch a youth match and he was playing. He sent a message to the manager of Manchester United and said; I think, i have found a genius. In 1965, he had his first full season with the club, and United won the league title.Next year they got to the semi-final of the European Cup.They were the first English side to win the European Cup.

He went out with Miss world, and he got 10,000 fan letters a week.In 1978, he married a model and he had a baby son,but the marriage didn't last, because he couldnt stop drinking. Many people still talk about the wastes of such a wonderful talent. He was George Best and he is still the best.

I like the personality of George Best but I think finally he lost every fame he gained.

and I went to library I took Mahatma Gandhi. I read this book and Gandhi's a good man - he wanted all Indians to forget their differences and live in peace together and I think that is a good thing we should all think about. The six 6 book challenge is good I really enjoyed it.
